Council approves three-month Maple Street closure for summer

NJ SUMMIT — Common Council approves temporary Maple Street closure from June through September for outdoor dining. The Council voted 5-2 to authorize the closure, with Councilmembers Boyer and Pawlowski opposing on grounds that the measure does not meet state law's requirement of being necessary for public safety, health, or welfare. Mayor Fagan shared these legal concerns but acknowledged support for outdoor dining in principle.
Councilmembers Crisafulli, Kalmanson, and Landman supported the closure as a means to strengthen downtown business activity and foster community gathering space. The closure requires certification by the City Engineer and New Jersey Department of Transportation approval before implementation.
