Council approves Wilson Park subdivision for affordable housing

NJ SUMMIT — Council OKs controversial Wilson Park subdivision for affordable housing after site search. The Common Council voted 5-1 to approve Ordinance 26-3381, authorizing subdivision of Block 1702, Lot 48 for a nonprofit affordable housing project, with Councilmember Landman dissenting. Residents opposed loss of limited parkland, citing environmental impacts and child safety concerns.
Summit has 51.5 acres of municipal parkland for 22,700 residents, below recommended standards. Municipal Housing Liaison Augusto Dal'Maso said alternative sites were deemed infeasible after 18 months of evaluation. Council members framed the decision as necessary to maintain municipal zoning control and prevent private development.
