Council Introduces Maple Street Closure Ordinance on Divisive 5-2 Vote

NJ SUMMIT — Summit Council introduces controversial Maple Street ordinance on 5-2 vote. The Common Council introduced ordinance 26-3380 to temporarily close Maple Street to pedestrian use from June 18 to September 7, 2026. Council President Toth and Councilmembers Crisafulli, Landman, Lasaracina, and Kalmanson voted for introduction; Boyer and Pawlowski opposed, citing lack of Safety Committee review and emergency access concerns.
Councilmember Crisafulli said a traffic study showed no significant impact. The Council unanimously adopted three related traffic ordinances: amendments to street excavation code, municipal parking regulations, and speed limits on Orchard Street and Springfield Avenue.
