Summit Council approves comprehensive affordable housing zoning overhaul.

NJ SUMMIT — Summit Common Council passes seven zoning ordinances for Fair Share Housing compliance. Council President Claire Toth presided as the council unanimously approved six new affordable housing zones and amended existing overlay zones to require 20 percent affordable housing set-asides as part of the city's Fourth Round strategy. Affordable Housing Planner Tom Behrens noted the plan includes TH-3 townhouse zoning for Block 3401, with a mid-point review scheduled for 2028.
Despite public concerns from Franklin Place residents about traffic and density, the ordinance passed unanimously along with permanent closure of the Chestnut Lot and creation of a new code chapter for vacant and foreclosed properties.
